6th Annual Weekly Classic Car Cruise-In at Das Dutchman Essenhaus

MIDDLEBURY – The campus of Das Dutchman Essenhaus will be the host site of a weekly classic car cruise-in during the summer months with no participation or entry fee. This will be the sixth season for the popular and well attended activity. The main campus of Das Dutchman Essenhaus is located at 240 U.S. 20 Middlebury, Indiana.

Beginning May 5th, 2011, and every Thursday evening through September, local collectors and enthusiasts as well as regional car clubs are invited and encouraged to drive their classic cars to the Essenhaus campus.

With many local participants taking advantage of showcasing their own vehicles, Joel Miller, Vice President of Development and Facilities states, “We have a great property with abundant parking that allows everyone attending to really enjoy their time here. We average more than 200 unique vehicles on display each week!”

The weekly cruise-in events are scheduled each Thursday evening from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm May through September. Guests will also enjoy door prize giveaways, coupons for shopping and dining, and 50’s-style music each Thursday evening. Many times, hand dipped ice cream and occasionally themed evenings and live entertainment will be provided. Tourists and local guests are welcome to visit.

Coveleski Stadium to Host Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®
Fundraising Event will take place on April 30th

South Bend, IN – The South Bend Silver Hawks are honored to announce that newly renovated Coveleski Stadium will host the Susan G. Komen Northern Indiana Race for the Cure® on April 30th, 2011.

Racers will depart from Coveleski Stadium and weave through the streets of downtown South Bend as part of their fundraising efforts. The start and finish line to the event will be on South Street, along the first base side of the Cove. The course will be certified by USA Track and Field.

“We’ve long been supporters of breast cancer research through our Pink at the Cove games in the past,” said Joe Kernan, Team President of the Silver Hawks. “The Komen Race is another big step in showing our support to this worthy cause and we are thrilled to be hosting it in April.”

The 2011 races will mark the 28th anniversary of the Race for the Cure®, which debuted in 1983 with 800 walkers in Dallas, Texas. According to komen.org, the events are now “the world’s largest 5K Run/Walk series with more than 140 Races and 1.6 million people participating on four continents.” This will be the 3rd Annual event for Northern Indiana and is expected to draw more than 2500 participants from across Northern Indiana.

Even with the worldwide reach, the race in South Bend has a profound local impact. According to Anita Selesky, the Susan G. Komen Northern Indiana Affiliate Coordinator, “75 percent of the money raised from this race goes toward funding grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved women within the 27 Northern Indiana counties. The remaining 25 percent goes to Komen National for research.” Selesky adds that “The event is really a way to celebrate breast cancer survivorship and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease.”

The weekend celebration kicks off on Friday, April 29th, with a free concert sponsored by Michiana Hematology Oncology featuring The Whistle Pigs. The concert begins at 7 PM with a special ceremony at dusk to honor survivors and celebrate the global fight against breast cancer.

Racers can register in advance through the Susan G. Komen Northern Indiana webpage at http://komennorthernindiana.org/. On-site registration begins the morning of the race at 7 AM, with the race beginning at 9 AM.

Baum Registers Win but Valpo Falls at Toledo

Chris Baum (Charlotte, N.C./Providence H.S.) earned a victory at fifth singles for Valparaiso, but the Crusaders dropped a 6-1 decision to Toledo on Saturday evening at Laurel Hill Racquet Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Baum registered a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bryant Dudzik to pick up his second win of the season. Kevin DeHerrera (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) forced a tie-break for the third set at number six singles before falling 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 against Leonardo Henriques.

“Chris really stepped up his game midway through the first set,” head coach Jim Daugherty said. “He was down a break 3-4 and fought back to turn the set around as well as the match.”

Toledo (6-4) won the top four singles contests all in straight sets. Nutthavit Likitkumchorn earned a 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Adam Whitmer (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview H.S.) at the top of the lineup while Sven Burus topped Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) 6-0, 6-2 at number two singles. Aleksandar Elezovic defeated Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) 6-4, 6-0 at three while Leo Sarria downed Arne Deihle (Reutlingen, Germany/Johannes Kepler H.S.) 6-3, 6-1 at the fourth spot.

The Rockets opened the match sweeping all three doubles matches for the day’s first point. Likitkumchorn and Elezovic defeated Litscher and DeHerrera 8-3 at first doubles while Burus and Sarria topped Whitmer and Baum 8-4 at the second spot. Dudzik and Terence Weigand added an 8-7 (4) victory over Stump and Deihle to round out the lineup.

Valparaiso (1-4) will have nearly a month off before returning to action on March 7 against Creighton to begin its spring trip in Orlando, Fla.
